How do you simulate realistic user behavior in performance tests?

  • realistic simulation
  • user behavior
  • traffic patterns

Answer it first, then compare. Nothing here is saved or scored.

Model answer

Techniques: (1) Analyze production traffic patterns (peak hours, geographic distribution, device mix). (2) Model user journeys, not just individual endpoints (browse, search, add to cart, checkout). (3) Add think time between actions (realistic pauses, not machine-gun requests). (4) Use varied test data, different users, products, search terms. (5) Ramp up gradually, not instant spike. (6) Include authentication and session management. (7) Model the ratio of read vs write operations from production. Without realistic behavior, your test results will not predict production performance.

What interviewers listen for

  • Workload modelling
You design the load shape from product traffic, not from tool defaults.
  • Percentile literacy
You read p50/p95/p99 separately and explain why each matters.
  • Bottleneck triage
You correlate metrics across application, database, and infrastructure layers.
  • Capacity instincts
You can translate a soak test into a sizing or scaling recommendation.
