Compare Playwright, Selenium, and Cypress. When would you choose each?

  • Playwright
  • Selenium
  • Cypress
  • tool selection

Answer it first, then compare. Nothing here is saved or scored.

Model answer

Playwright: best for modern web apps, auto-wait, multi-browser (Chromium, Firefox, WebKit), supports multiple languages, great for parallelism. Selenium: mature ecosystem, supports any language/browser, best when you need to integrate with legacy infrastructure or non-web testing. Cypress: excellent DX for JavaScript teams, time-travel debugging, but limited to Chromium-family browsers and single-tab testing. Choose based on team skills, browser requirements, and existing infrastructure.

What interviewers listen for

  • Test architecture instincts
You can defend why your suite is shaped like a pyramid, a trophy, or a honeycomb.
  • Locator discipline
You rank selector strategies by stability and explain when to break the rule.
  • Flaky test ownership
You debug to a structural fix instead of retry-until-green.
  • Parallelisation literacy
You know how your framework isolates state, fixtures, and database access across workers.
