How would you design an automation strategy for a microservices architecture?

  • microservices
  • contract testing
  • service testing

Answer it first, then compare. Nothing here is saved or scored.

Model answer

Test at three levels: (1) Service-level, contract tests (Pact) ensure services communicate correctly, unit/integration tests within each service. (2) Integration - API tests that verify end-to-end flows across services using test environments with all services deployed. (3) E2E - minimal UI tests for critical user journeys. Use consumer-driven contracts to catch integration breaks early. Service virtualization (WireMock) for isolated testing when dependencies are unavailable. Shift ownership: each team owns their service's tests.

What interviewers listen for

  • Test architecture instincts
You can defend why your suite is shaped like a pyramid, a trophy, or a honeycomb.
  • Locator discipline
You rank selector strategies by stability and explain when to break the rule.
  • Flaky test ownership
You debug to a structural fix instead of retry-until-green.
  • Parallelisation literacy
You know how your framework isolates state, fixtures, and database access across workers.
