01 · Why track applications

A spreadsheet works until you have eight in flight

You forget which resume you used

Three weeks in, recruiter calls back, and you can't remember if you sent the SDET-leaning resume or the platform-engineering one. The paid version links the exact resume version to each card.

You miss the interview prep window

A take-home and a system-design round have very different prep checklists. The free tool tracks status; the paid version sends you the right primer 24 hours before each interview.

You lose pattern signal

After 30 applications you should be able to see which stages you drop in, which companies move fastest, which JDs got the highest response rate. The archived view in the paid tracker keeps your closed apps for exactly that.

02 · Free vs Application Tracker

What you get when you sign up

The free tool is a kanban. The paid version adds the things that actually change outcomes - primer emails sent the day before each interview with type-specific prep, automatic resume + cover letter linkingper application, and a real backend so your data doesn't live on one laptop.

Questions before you start

Where is my data stored?

In your browser, using localStorage. Nothing leaves your machine. The paid version syncs to a Supabase backend that only you can read (row-level security on user_id).

What happens if I clear my browser cache?

You lose your applications, because they live in localStorage. Use the Export button to save a JSON backup. The paid Application Tracker syncs everything to a backend, so cache clearing or a new laptop is a non-event.

Can I import data later from the export?

Yes. The Import button accepts the same JSON shape we export, so you can move between devices manually - or import historical data into the paid tracker after upgrading.

How is this different from a spreadsheet or Notion template?

For a small pipeline, not very. The free tool gives you drag-and-drop and saves clicks, but a spreadsheet works fine for under 10 apps. The real value of the paid tracker is the primer emails and the cover letter / resume linking - those are not things a spreadsheet does, even a well-designed one.

Why is the free version capped at 50?

Two reasons. localStorage has a 5-10 MB hard limit and 50 detailed applications fits comfortably. And realistically, if you are running more than 50 active applications, you have outgrown a single-device tool.

Is this really free or is there a hidden upgrade gate?

No gate. You can use the free kanban indefinitely with no account. The paid version exists because primer emails, cross-device sync, and AI features require a server, and servers cost money.
