C# Interview Questions for Testers

Preparing for a C# or .NET QA or SDET interview? Practice with an AI that asks about LINQ, OOP, NUnit, xUnit and MSTest, Selenium and Playwright for .NET, and the async code modern test suites rely on.

What do interviewers ask about C#?

C# interviews for testers start with language fundamentals: value vs reference types, properties, generics, nullable reference types, and LINQ for filtering and shaping test data. Expect OOP and SOLID questions applied to page objects and test utilities, then the test frameworks: NUnit ([Test], [TestCase], [SetUp]), xUnit ([Fact], [Theory], [InlineData], constructor and IDisposable setup) and MSTest ([TestClass], [TestMethod], [DataRow]). You will also be asked about Selenium WebDriver waits and Playwright for .NET, API tests with HttpClient or RestSharp, async/await in test code, and how each framework runs tests in parallel under dotnet test.

What do C# interviewers ask at junior, mid and senior level?

The same tool, three different interviews. Find your row before you prepare.

C# interview questions by level: junior, mid-level and senior
JuniorWhat interviewers probeC# basics for test code, NUnit or xUnit attributes, assertions, and running a suite with dotnet test.Typical questionWhat does a simple NUnit or xUnit test look like in C#, and how do you run only the tests in one category?
Mid-levelWhat interviewers probeLINQ over test data, page objects with interfaces, data-driven tests, async/await in tests, and API checks with HttpClient.Typical questionWhy should an async test return Task instead of void, and what goes wrong if it blocks on .Result?
SeniorWhat interviewers probeFramework architecture for a .NET suite, parallel execution and isolation, dependency injection, and CI time and flakiness.Typical questionA .NET UI suite takes 40 minutes in CI. How would you make it safe to run in parallel and cut the time?

Which C# topics come up most?

Key areas interviewers evaluate when asking about c# for testing.

C# Fundamentals & LINQ

Value vs reference types, properties, generics, nullable reference types, and LINQ queries over test data.

OOP & SOLID for Test Code

Interfaces, abstract classes, composition, and SOLID principles applied to page objects and test helpers.

NUnit, xUnit & MSTest

Attributes, data-driven tests, setup and teardown lifecycle, and filtering runs with dotnet test.

Selenium & Playwright for .NET

WebDriverWait and explicit waits, Playwright PageTest base classes, locators, and auto-retrying assertions.

API Testing (HttpClient & RestSharp)

Sending requests, deserializing JSON, validating responses, and reusing HttpClient instances safely.

Async/Await & Parallel Runs

Task-returning async tests, avoiding blocking calls, and how each framework parallelizes test execution.

What are common C# interview questions?

Questions based on real interview patterns. Practice answering these with AssertHired’s AI interviewer.

  1. 01

What is the difference between a value type and a reference type in C#? How can it cause a bug in shared test data?

  2. 02

How would you use LINQ to pick the rows you need from a list of test users? When would you use First vs FirstOrDefault?

  3. 03

Compare NUnit, xUnit and MSTest. How does each handle setup, teardown, and data-driven tests?

  4. 04

Why does an async test method need to return Task instead of void?

  5. 05

How do you wait for an element in Selenium with C#? Why should you not mix implicit and explicit waits?

  6. 06

Why should you reuse an HttpClient instance instead of creating one per request in an API test suite?

  7. 07

xUnit runs test classes in parallel by default, while NUnit and MSTest do not on their own. How would you make a .NET UI suite safe to run in parallel?

Frequently Asked Questions

What C# topics matter most for SDET interviews?

OOP and interfaces, generics, collections and LINQ, exception handling, and async/await. On top of that, expect at least one test framework in depth (NUnit, xUnit or MSTest) and Selenium or Playwright for .NET.

Should I learn NUnit, xUnit or MSTest?

Learn the one the job posting names, then know how the other two differ. NUnit and MSTest use setup attributes such as [SetUp] and [TestInitialize]. xUnit creates a new test class instance for every test and uses the constructor and IDisposable instead. The core ideas carry over between all three.

Can I use Playwright with C#?

Yes. Playwright for .NET ships integration packages for NUnit, MSTest and xUnit. Their PageTest base class gives each test a fresh page in its own browser context, which keeps tests isolated.

Can I practice C# interview questions for testers on AssertHired?

Yes. AssertHired's AI interviewer can run a session with C# as your language, asking about test frameworks, page objects, API tests, and async code with follow-ups.
