Explain the Page Object Model pattern and why it matters for test maintenance.
- page object model
- design patterns
- maintenance
Answer it first, then compare. Nothing here is saved or scored.
Model answer
POM separates page interactions (selectors, actions) from test logic. Each page or component gets its own class/object with methods like fillEmail(), clickSubmit(). Benefits: when a selector changes, you update one file instead of dozens of tests. It improves readability, tests read like user stories. It enables reuse, the same page object works across multiple test files. Without POM, selector changes cascade through every test file.
What interviewers listen for
- Test architecture instinctsYou can defend why your suite is shaped like a pyramid, a trophy, or a honeycomb.
- Locator disciplineYou rank selector strategies by stability and explain when to break the rule.
- Flaky test ownershipYou debug to a structural fix instead of retry-until-green.
- Parallelisation literacyYou know how your framework isolates state, fixtures, and database access across workers.
