What is the Page Object Model (POM) and why is it important in test automation?

  • POM
  • design patterns
  • maintainability

Answer it first, then compare. Nothing here is saved or scored.

Model answer

POM is a design pattern that creates an abstraction layer between test scripts and UI elements. Each page (or component) gets a class that encapsulates its locators and interactions. Benefits: reduces duplication (one locator update fixes all tests), improves readability (tests read like user stories), and makes maintenance scalable. Without POM, a single UI change can break dozens of tests.

What interviewers listen for

  • Test architecture instincts
You can defend why your suite is shaped like a pyramid, a trophy, or a honeycomb.
  • Locator discipline
You rank selector strategies by stability and explain when to break the rule.
  • Flaky test ownership
You debug to a structural fix instead of retry-until-green.
  • Parallelisation literacy
You know how your framework isolates state, fixtures, and database access across workers.
